EASY READ
What is easy read?
Easy read is a plain language model that aims to make texts accessible to people with intellectual disabilities, learning difficulties, a low level of education or limited language skills.
According to the OECD’s PIAAC 2024 report, in Italy around one third of the population is functionally illiterate. Using easy read could therefore make it easier for those without adequate reading and writing skills to access information, fostering their inclusion in society.
At present, easy read is mainly used by administrative bodies, museums and libraries. But if communication was made more accessible in all fields, everybody would be able to find out information and act independently.
How do you “translate” a text into easy read?
You adapt it. You rewrite it using plain, clear and effective language. The Inclusion Europe “Information for all” European guidelines sum up the general rules to make a text that is easy to read and to understand. These include:
