Language editing: humans 1 – machines 0

Over the years as a freelance I’ve language edited English-to-Italian and German-to-Italian translated texts, or Italian-only texts and PDF texts for print approval. I’ve checked contracts, business correspondence, adverts on all types of media, I’ve given the thumbs up to print catalogues, magazines and leaflets in all sectors of goods. 

And now I hear that AI can do all this work almost for free. Really?
My favourite word in German is mitdenken, a compound verb made of the particle mit (with, together) and the verb denken (to think). It means using your head, making your own contribution, reflecting, activating your brain, and not just mechanically doing your little task.

My added value as a human professional is to safeguard my clients from errors. So when I spot inconsistencies in terms of contents, prices that don’t correspond to the percentage discount, mistakes in press releases, I can’t just let it lie. I ask. Because a human professional asks questions. Because they denken mit. Because they know the world.
